Understanding Gender

How are sex and gender different?

Gender is socially constructed, while sex is a biological trait. On the unicorn, gender is displayed by how the unicorn thinks of him(her)self, while the sex is displayed as "sex assigned at birth". Sex and gender are different. What one thinks of herself( gender identity) and how one presents herself ( gender expression) can also be different.

WiseGuyz is a program started in Alberta to promote healthy sexual and physical health and a safe space for boys to ask any questions they may have about sex. It also talks about sexual identity and orientation, something that a lot of boys are uncomfortable discussing in front of girls. Breaking boys and girls apart provides a safer space where boys are encouraged to be more open.

What is one thing you plan to do as a teacher to create an inclusive classroom for gender-nonconforming youth?

I plan on creating a safe space in my classroom so that students know that I am someone they can come to and not be afraid of judgment. I think that it is the teacher’s job to be open and understanding with her student and respect each student as an individual. When that happens in the classroom, rainbow flags and stickers become superfluous. The more I learn, the more understanding I am becoming and I think that I will try learning about all my students in order to understand them a little better. If I have a student that is gender non-conforming, I may ask them a question about their choice. I wouldn’t approach them in a way that I think this is wrong, simply as a curious observer. I would encourage other students in my classroom to ask questions as well if they don’t understand something. I think this way, an open dialogue can happen and there isn’t any hidden prejudice or discrimination towards those that aren’t like you.
