Learning Management Systems
There are three types of classroom settings that are used. Two of them that allow for flexible learning are: the blended classroom and the online classroom. Both blended and online classrooms will include the use of a LMS. A Learning Management System (LMS) is an online application that allow for, and provides an extensive set of tools for educators to create and perform learning resources, administrative functions, assessments, and grading on the web. The key to LMS is that is it web based and focused on online learning for the student, it acts as a virtual classroom. It provides for teachers the opportunity to create course content online and usually includes such tools are calendar, drop boxes, and course outlines.
From a student perspective, a LMS allows them to : learn anytime and anyplace and at any pace (Learnit2teach).
Part A
I created my very own LMS this week through an interactive site called Haiku. To access my Haiku Learning class here on this link
Part B
This week I created my very first lesson on Haiku Learning for secondary students whom are interested in philosophy. I created a course entitled "Philosophy Topics" and it is geared towards introducing students to certain trains of thought in classical western philosophy. Students whom take my class will be introduced to some of the main topics that are popularized in Western Philosophy. I separated my course into 3 units, each with their own means of assessment and assignments, I liked how Haiku has the option to make this happen by being able to add pages and subpages to your pages. It was a great way to get organized. Furthermore, what I liked is the ability that Haiku had for creating your own assessment as a teacher. This option gave the kids ability to write their quizzes online. My course had 2 quizzes per unit so in total I would create 6 quizzes. I liked how the quizzes were very varied and easy to make as the teacher. For each question, you were given the option whether to create a multiple-choice question, true of false, short essay etc. There were many formats available. For my quiz, I chose mainly short essay responses because I am encouraging and training my students to enhance their critical thinking skills. They have a paragraph on the quiz where they can type out their responses. Another really useful tool on Haiku is the Calendar. The Calendar allowed me to create a "Due dates" section by placing the quizzes and assignment right into the calendar so that students will always know when they are, just by looking on the calendar. I also liked how interactive Haiku was. It allowed for group discussions and comments from the student in regards to the assignments.
