Timing of Puberty
Both boys and girls experience puberty differently depending on the:
societal image ideal
The timing of puberty is very important for an adolescent. They don't to be different from their peers or miss out on other important phases of their life, such as childhood. Girls struggle with early onset of puberty while boys struggle with late onset of puberty. The ideal female body, according to Western society, is slim with big boobs. However, girls who hit puberty early get big hips, big boobs, yet remain short which can make them look chubby. Boys who struggle with a late onset of puberty remain looking small and short for their age. Western society in comparison prizes muscular, tall and fit men.
The best way to influence anybody's behaviour is to educate them and let them make their own decision. That being said, educating my teens about the physical effects on the brain due to unhealthy life habits would be my first way to encourage them to be healthy. I think most teens aren't aware of how their unhealthy behaviour affects their body- they think their actions don't have consequences. To break that notion, I would show my kids images and videos about what happens when you smoke, don't exercise enough ( 30 min a day min! ) or eat too much junk. There was a study done that showed the results of the importance of a good night's sleep. Most kids care about what they look like so these pictures might hurt their ego and make them rethink their actions.I would also have my students move around in my classroom more, with is in line with one of the brain rules.
Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and the BRAIN:
Allowing the students to see the sometimes disturbing effects of harmful behaviour such as binge drinking with their own eyes would be a powerful influence on them since we are visual creatures by our very nature. Another way in which I would encourage my students
to make healthy choices is by leading by example. I would bring healthy snacks to school and be active in my spare time. I think it is very important to walk the walk if you talk the talk. I think that if my students respect me as their educator, they will pick up on things that I do. Adolescents are very influential and I think that they would be influenced by an adult that they trust, such as their teacher.
